The Basilica Cistern, Istanbul, Turkey. Built by Justinian in AD 532, the cistern is 65 meters wide, 143 meters long and its roof is supported by 336 columns arranged in 12 rows. It was originally used to store water for the Great Palace and surrounding buildings. It once held 80,000 cubic meters of water, pumped and delivered through nearly 20 km of aqueducts.
